Selina introduces Farmhouse Breakfast Week devoted to encouraging healthy breakfast
Farmhouse Breakfast Week has been running since 2000, championing the importance of breakfast which aims to get the nation to Shake Up Their Wake Up! Organised by the HGCA the aim of the campaign is “to raise awareness of the benefits of eating a healthy breakfast and demonstrate the variety of breakfast foods available in the UK.”
It’s run on behalf of farmers who grow crops and locally produce products such as wheat, barley and oats. To raise awareness for their businesses and livelihoods as wells as promoting a healthy breakfast.
Farmhouse Breakfast Week is taking place this week (20 – 26 January 2013) and lots of individuals and businesses have been taking part and helping to promote a healthy, diverse, great British breakfast.
With this year’s theme people are encouraged to make small changes to their breakfast routine in the hope they make more effort for their breakfast meal than any other meal of the day.
Why eat breakfast?
It’s often said that breakfast is the most important meal of the day and that’s not surprising after you have slept and not eaten for 10-12 hours before.
A hearty breakfast ultimately helps you resist the urge for a 11am coffee and cake break plus minimises the need to snack. We’ve all had habits of missing breakfast at some point in our lives, which can leave you feeling groggy, tired both mentally and physically unable to concentrate for very long.
During this week it’s encouraged schools, families, everyone can take part in spreading the word or organising their own events. From holding a breakfast club activity, to local farmer or chef visits, classroom activities and educational games.
Suggestions for a healthy, nutritious and tasty breakfast:
• Water, Herbal Tea – it’s time to rehydrate
• Freshly squeezed fruit juice/fruit – you will be on your way to your 5 a-day
• Milk and dairy products (e.g. yogurts) – provide protein and calcium or Soya Products
• Bread, porridge and low sugar cereals – give you carbohydrates and vitamins and minerals
• Eggs, low fat bacon, low salt baked beans - are high in protein and prepare your muscles for the day ahead.
Here is a perfect healthy breakfast recipe, to help you get inspired!
Quinoa Cakes with Poached Eggs
90 grams cooked organic quinoa
40 g white onion, finely sliced
40 g green olives, stoned and chopped finely
1 garlic clove, chopped finely
15g Mature Cheddar Cheese, grated
1 Free Range egg
1 Free Range egg (white only)
Dash of vinegar
10g panko breadcrumbs
Firstly mix onions, chickpeas, green olives, garlic, parsley and quinoa together, in a bowl
Then add grated cheese into the mixture, plus eggs and breadcrumbs. Shape into patties, cover with cling film on a plate and place in the fridge for 15 minutes.
Place a saucepan on the hob, on a medium heat, with a little olive oil, fry your patties gently till crispy on both sides and cooked. While they are frying make your poached eggs and then assemble on the plate with a poached egg on top of each quinoa cake. A healthy start to the morning and a brilliant breakfast.
